This project is an update to the LoveOly downtown visitor guide map, which previously was a parking zone map from the City of Olympia. The previous map didn’t reflect the spirit of the community or significant landmarks that make Olympia unique, and lacked visual elements to draw in the audience.
ODA requested a more whimsical map with landmarks, public restroom locations, and cultural elements including hand drawn iconography.
This new map update brings in color from the LoveOly brand guide, a more playful and illustrative style, and illustration representative of Olympia being the capitol city with the Washington State goldfinch and rhododendron. The map also incorporates an important land acknowledgment for the Squaxin Island tribe and the Lushootseed name for Budd Inlet.
So excited to see this LBA Woods trail map sign installed at trailheads now!
This was a project that probably took two years start to finish with lots of thoughtful contemplation. This was definitely a team effort as it was the first stylized trail map for City parks integrating vector art, GIS mapping, accessible wayfinding, and interpretive sign elements. And, the first trail map of LBA woods! Now you can find your way!
The larger sign will soon to be installed in a larger kiosk by the playground area.
I just love making maps and I’m grateful for all I learned in my time at the City about making accurate and visually appealing maps. Geography and map making has been a long time interest of mine and it was so cool to work with planners and GIS staff to make projects like these come to life.
City of Olympia twice yearly Arts Walk event poster featuring work from a local artist.
Peninsula environmental postcard for their marketing team to share with prospective clients. This card utilizes the use of icons to better visualize the services provided by this environmental consulting firm.
New Percival Landing Harbor House heritage displays! These were tricky to design — sensitive historic content with multiple reviewers, tracking down high quality photos, and then came the printing…thankful for great local printer Graphic Communications for finding a solution (vinyl!) to print large format and install in a tight space!
Also fun to get out from behind the computer and help install something I designed, I don’t get to do that too much anymore.
Take a stroll along Percival landing and read up on local maritime history!
Grand Oly Opry returns with a fresh poster design for the event this October!
Poster for the 2023 Oly Pub Crawl. The event organizer was looking for a throwback feel to the original Olympia beer logo and Tumwater falls, the location where the original brewery still stands today.
An honor to create the signage for the newly renamed Squaxin Park (formerly Priest Point Park). This signage was done in partnership with the Squaxin Island Tribe. My suggestion to have a welcome message in the Lushootseed language makes the sign much more heartfelt — the messages translation meaning “We are joyful you are here”.
AWESOME infographic to work on -- my first in about a year. Another piece of the Olympia Strong economic resiliency project -- diving into the data and making it visual and easily digestible for our audience.
Recently I designed multiple graphics for a virtual Black History Month celebration sponsored by the City of Olympia and various non-profit organizations. This included working closely with the event coordinator and other assigned communications staff, as well as outside non-profits, to develop a creative brief and communications plan to create appropriate graphics for this event to be displayed across multiple social media platforms, the website, and within the virtual event. This was a project on a tight timeline that required multiple revisions and input from staff and external partners prior to launch.
